Bathroom Delta Faucet Repair

Bathroom Delta Faucet Repair

Wanna learn how to fix a leaky faucet? Specifically a leaky Delta faucet? You're in the right place.

A bathroom faucet leak can be one of the most frustrating things about being a homeowner. But don't fear this common problem.

You can do this fix yourself and save your money for the movies instead.

Let's dive in!

Getting Started with Leaky Faucets

This post deals with repairing a Delta bath sink two-handle center-set faucet. If that isn't a mouthful I really don't know what is. The faucet in question is in the picture.

This small quick project requires the following supplies:

  • Delta Universal Seats & Springs Repair Kit
  • Delta Stem Unit Assembly
  • Allen wrench
  • Channel Locks
  • Needle Nose Pliers

If you have all of these tools or can borrow them the cost for the Delta replacement parts is under $20.00.

I'm sharing this tutorial because I've had to do this repair many times and discovered a few tips that will help you make it quick and painless. Plus, there's a video for your viewing enjoyment. Don't bother grabbing popcorn, it's only 3 minutes long (tight budget, haha).

So let's do it!

Determine How to Fix a Leaky Faucet…

The first step is to identify the type of faucet you have. In this case, I'm repairing a bathroom sink two-handle center-set faucet.

Then you'll need to determine the area of the faucet that is leaking.

Is the leak coming from under the Delta bathroom faucet handle or is the leak coming from the aerator?

I knew the leak was coming from the aerator because I saw it first thing in the morning when I shuffled into the bathroom to begin my day. The pop-up stopper was always wet which indicated a persistent drip.

Turn the hot water shutoff valve under the sink to the off position (completely to the right). Check to see if the leak is still there. If the leak is gone you know the hot water side of the faucet is the culprit.

If the drip persists then you know the cold water side of the faucet is to blame.

You can also follow this flow chart to figure out HOW to fix the Delta bathroom faucet leak.

Delta Bathroom Faucet Repair Flow Chart

(A special thanks to Powell Svendsen for pointing out an error on the first version of my flow chart :))

Using a Delta Bathroom Faucet Repair Kit

Before you do anything make sure the water is turned off to the faucet. You'll only have to shut off the water to the corresponding handle that was causing the drip.

As promised, here's the video that walks you through this entire fix but you can also view the pictures below if you prefer that instead.

To access the Delta faucet cartridge and seats & springs you'll have to remove the faucet handle & body.

Unscrew the delta faucet handle by hand and use an Allen wrench to loosen the set screw that holds the handle body in place.

Then remove the faucet handle body and set it aside.

Delta Bathroom Faucet Leaks-Unscrew the faucet handle

Delta Bathroom Faucet Leaks-Remove the faucet handle body

Unscrew the stem unit nut with channel locks.

And take a picture of the stem unit before you remove it with the channel locks.

Believe it or not, there is a proper way to reinstall it and a picture comes in handy.

Delta Bathroom Faucet Leaks-Loosen the stem unit nut with channel locks

Remove the old delta faucet cartridge with channel locks or needle-nose pliers.

Delta Bathroom Faucet Leaks-Remove the old cartridge with pliers

If you need to replace the little rubber seat and metal spring you can use needle-nose pliers to do so. I tried using my wife's tweezers but they didn't work (don't tell her, she wouldn't be happy).

Delta Bathroom Faucet Leaks-Extract the old seat and spring

I always put the new seat and spring down into the faucet together as one unit. Just make sure they're oriented like in the picture below with the wider side of the spring facing down into the faucet.

Delta Bathroom Faucet Leaks-Make sure the wider side of the spring faces down

Finally, firmly press the seat & spring into the faucet. If you need to replace the cartridge because you had a drip coming from the aerator go ahead and do that now following the tips in my video.

As an FYI, one of my readers (Powell Svendsen) was able to clean the O-rings on the cartridge and eliminate a leak coming from the aerator. So you could give this a try before buying a new cartridge unit.

Thanks, Powell for sharing your great tip!!

Screw the stem unit lock nut onto the faucet base and put the Delta faucet handle back in place.

You're done!!!

What Paint Should I Use for Wood?

From the cabinets in your kitchen to a piece of furniture to a fun craft, there are plenty of wood items you can paint. And one of the best things about wood is that it accepts a variety of paints well, whether you opt for something that's acrylic or an oil-based formula. Painting wood is an easy way to change its look and give it some new personality, but it's not always clear what paint to use for different projects and applications. Here's what you need to know about the right paint to use for wood.

What's Your Project?

First, it's essential to figure out the nature of your project, meaning you'll need to determine not only what you're painting but also where it's located or going to be used. Are you painting shingles on the exterior of your home? Or are you painting an outdoor deck that'll see a lot of foot traffic? How about kitchen cabinets that people will touch often, or a bathroom shelf that'll be exposed to high humidity from the shower?

Knowing things like whether or not it's going to get wet, how often someone's going to use it or touch it and what overall effect or look you want to achieve are all essential for determining what paint you should use for the project. Wood accepts a very wide range of paints and stains, but each of those can have differing levels of durability and protection. Some paints are better than others in certain situations, and you'll need to know your particular situation before you make your choice.

Paint Types and Formulas

The great thing about wood is that, as long as you apply primer to it in most cases, any type of paint works well on it, depending on what function you need your project to serve. Generally speaking, paints to use on wood are water-based or oil-based. Acrylic and latex are the two most common types of water-based paints, while oil-based paints fall into two categories: synthetic or natural. Each of these is better than others for specific applications.

Latex paint is quick-drying, easy to clean and better for the environment than other types. It's also less likely to discolor over time. However, it's not the most durable choice, as it can scratch and chip easily. It's best for indoor wood items or surfaces that you won't touch or use very often, such as rarely used furniture, storage cabinet doors, stair spindles and picture frames. Latex paint is often the most affordable type.

Acrylic paint is ideal for home exteriors, although you can also use oil-based paint here. If the exterior is made up of different materials, such as stone and wood, you're better off choosing acrylic. Materials like stone and masonry need breathable paint to allow moisture and water vapor to pass through, and oil-based paint prevents this. Acrylic craft paints are also widely available and easy to use and clean up if you're doing a simple DIY craft project using wood.

Synthetic oil paint, which is also called alkyd, is the best choice for applications where you need a lot more durability. Think everyday furniture that'll get used and jostled often, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, interior trims like baseboards and door frames that'll get kicked and touched often, and flooring indoors and out. Oil-based paints are more rigid than flexible, water-based types so they're less likely to chip — even when people are walking on them — and they're also easier to wash clean because of this.

Natural oil paint, called linseed, is best for craft projects on which you want to create a warm, aged patina. It's typically much more expensive than the synthetic variety, which is why it's best for smaller projects.

Prepping for the Project

To help the paint adhere well and to ensure the finish looks its best when everything is dry, it's important to prep your wood to get it ready. If you're painting an exterior surface or item, give everything a thorough wash to make sure there isn't any dirt, dust, moss or algae, all of which can keep the paint from sticking to the surface. If you're painting wood deck furniture, a table or something else for the outdoors that people will touch frequently, it's a wise idea to sand it before painting to give the paint something smooth to adhere to. Splinters and cracks can also keep the finished product from looking its best, and they're uncomfortable to sit on. Let the surface or or item dry out fully before applying the paint, and give it a few days to dry and start curing before you use it. It's best to do outdoor wood-painting projects while the weather is nice.

If you're repainting an interior surface or furniture such as kitchen cabinetry or a dresser, take a look at the existing paint or finish. If the item's current paint isn't chipped, cracked or bubbling, you can usually paint right over it; just sand the wood areas briefly to give the surface more texture for the paint to stick to. If you don't need to remove cabinet paint, it's still a good idea to clean the doors with a heavy-duty solution like TSP to eliminate all traces of grease and grime. If you do need to remove a little bit of paint, such as a few chipped areas, you can sand them down. However, you may need to use paint stripper for items with paint that's very damaged. This is a product that softens the old paint so you can scrape and wipe it all off.

A word of caution here: If your cabinets or other painted home surfaces were last done in the 1970s or earlier, they may contain lead-based paint. If you use a testing kit and determine there's lead in your paint, call the National Lead Information Center or your local health department to find out how to proceed.

Where Do Fruit Flies Come From In The Bathroom

Where Do Fruit Flies Come From In The Bathroom

How to get rid of fruit flies fast

How to get rid of fruit flies

Fruit flies are notoriously difficult to get rid of. It seems if you spot one hovering around your kitchen, the next day there's dozens or more. That's because fruit flies can actually lay up to 500 eggs, which hatch in as little as 24 hours.

So, if you notice a fruit fly, it's essential that you act quickly. Fortunately, we've pulled together some steps you can take to banish the fruit flies once and for all.

  • Take my advice — don't buy a window vacuum cleaner
  • Check out how to make your laundry room more eco-friendly
  • These everyday appliance mistakes are costing you money

Where do fruit flies come from?

You may be asking yourself, where have these fruit flies come from? Fruit flies are tiny, brown flies with red eyes that are attracted to rotting and fermenting fruit and food debris. So the first and most obvious culprit is the fruit bowl. Fruit flies can also breed in your drains, the trash or mop buckets. These pesky flies can even arrive on fresh fruit and produce, so you can get them no matter how clean your home is!

On top of being very annoying, fruit flies are not hygienic to have buzzing around either. They can contaminate any open food with bacteria and pathogens and will often lay their eggs inside rotten fruit. For this reason alone, you need to control the problem before it becomes an infestation.

How to get rid of fruit flies

Before you trap the flies, you need to clean the area thoroughly to stop them from continually breeding. To do this, wipe down all of the surfaces and remove any rotting food debris. This includes any in the sink, food disposal and taking out the trash as well. It's also a good idea to vacuum to get rid of any crumbs on the floor. It goes without saying that you need to throw away anything from the fruit bowl which is starting to ferment.

Fruit flies in vinegar

Method 1. Apple cider vinegar trap: This is the most traditional method for getting rid of fruit flies. Simply fill a small bowl with about a cup of apple cider vinegar. Then, cover it with plastic wrap and seal it using an elastic band. Following this, poke small holes in the top — you can do this using a toothpick. Now, you just leave it out to attract the flies! The smell of apple cider vinegar is irresistible to fruit flies and the idea is once they're in, they can't get out.

Method 2. Dishwasher detergent trap: If you don't have plastic wrap to hand, you can instead add a splash of dishwasher detergent to an open bowl of cider vinegar. The flies are once again attracted to the smell, but the dishwasher detergent decreases the surface tension, so once they land, they sink and drown.

Method 3. Rotting fruit trap: If rotting fruit is what brought them in, it can get them out as well! Set a trap in a jar by combining some fermenting fruit with a small amount of apple cider vinegar. Then, create a cone from paper and place the tapered end into the jar. The fruit will attract the flies and the cone will stop them from escaping.

Method 4. Bottles of old beer or wine: Fruit flies love the smell of fermenting beer and wine, so if you have a couple of near-empty bottles to hand, you can use these to your advantage. The smell lures them in, and thanks to the bottle neck, they can't escape!

Method 5. Fruit fly trap: If you don't want to use a DIY method, you can always invest in a chemical alternative such as Terro's Fruit Fly Trap ($5.88 at Amazon). This will have the same effect as the above methods.

If you're dealing with lots of fruit flies, you may want to set more than one of the above traps for best results!

If none of these methods work, you may not have fruit flies. Similar looking pests include fungus gnats and drain flies. Fungus gnats look more like mosquitos and can be found around plants, while drain flies usually hang around your drains or anywhere with stagnant water.

Tips to prevent fruit flies from coming back

  • Immediately throw away any old or fermenting food.
  • Rinse any new fruit as it arrives. This stops any eggs arriving on the back of fresh fruit.
  • Store your fruit in the fridge. This stops fruit flies from getting to it as easily.
  • Keep your home clean. Fruit flies thrive in a dirty environment and can even breed on crumbs, so keeping your home clean will help prevent them from returning in the future.
